![]() ![]() All versions of NT 6.0 could not properly SysPrep and automatically join a domain until SP1 was released, had the exact same group policy bugs, and all the same performance issues within the system services. ![]() At their heart, all versions of Windows NT 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 are the exact same thing. Windows NT 6.0 (Vista/2008) is when Microsoft merged the server and desktop code base for the kernel using Server 2003 as its start of its code base. Some of the responses you’ve gotten do not address the real issues. OK, as someone who personally started migrating my servers and desktops to Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows 2008 Datacenter between August 8th-14th 2006 when it was released to MSDN & Software Assurance holders, I can tell you some of why Server was well received and Vista was not. It was much, much harder to pirate and properly working pirate releases didn't appear for some time on the P2P networksĪll the Windows Vista/Server 2008/7/Server 2008 R2 naming mess reminds me of one question: Why was Vista so hated while Server 2008 wasn't? Was it because of the problems of the original Vista RTM release? The previous launch, XP, was very smooth thanks to Windows2000 being almost 3 years old at the time, and XP being extremely closely related to it. Most games were slower on launch due to immature video drivers It removed DirectSound 3D HW (thanks for sucking so hard, Creative) RTM's Windows Update was extremely flaky and prone to outright breaking XP had been MS' flagship OS for longer than any previous product: People were too used to it and did not like change There was a networking bug which limited transfer rates over gigabit to less than what you'd expect from 100 Mbit while WMP was active The poor reception Vista got was a combination of several things: Nobody blamed Vista for crap computers being crap, they would blame the manufacturer - the first name they see and the people who sold them the PC. XP with Office 2007 in just 512 MB was fucking painful - just like Vista would be. While the OS had stayed more or less constant over the years, the software used on it did not. The very same hardware would also run very poorly on XP, there were plenty of threads in this very forum of people "Removing that POS Vista but its still slow". ![]()
